Off-roader Car FAQs

It can be a matter of opinion as to which is the best all terrain vehicle ever built. It could be argued that a Land Rover Defender is one of the best with its long list of features and midrange base price providing great value. The Jeep Wrangler is also up there with its ladder frame, specialised articulating axles and outstanding approach and departure angle statistics. Plus, there is always the trusty Toyota HiLux, which has been quoted as the vehicle that started the world’s love affair with dual-cab 4x4 utes.

Some of the best 4x4 and off-road vehicles in Australia include the Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Land Cruiser, Subaru Outback, Suzuki Jimny and the Isuzu MU-X.

The best small off-road car for a young man will depend on his budget and off-road requirements. If the budget is smaller, some of the best off-road cars include the Nissun Y61 GU Patrol or Jeep Wrangler. The Suzuki Jimny is a good small size which may be suitable also.

Some of the best Toyota off-road vehicles of all time include the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, the Toyota HiLux, the Toyota Tundra, the Toyota Land Cruiser 60 Series and the Toyota 4Runner.

Off-road diesel is the same as conventional diesel fuel. Clear diesel, or on-road diesel is purchased at your local petrol station. Off-road diesel is dyed red and sold separately in bulk through distributors. The only real differences are the colour (red or clear), cost and intended use (on-road or off-road).

Because they are chemically the same, it is fine to mix off-road diesel with regular, or on-road diesel. Technically, the only tangible difference is the red coloured dyed.

FWD vehicles often get better traction for off-road because the weight of the engine is over the front wheels. Good traction in off-road terrain is generally safer in a FWD than a RWD.
