Is the Hyundai Sonata N Line Comfortable to Drive?

The Hyundai Sonata N Line is a fabulous package to drive, confidently tackling anything you can throw at it from a quiet commute through town to a spirited drive up a remote stretch of curves.

Power comes supplied by a spirited 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing a generous 213kW of power and 422Nm of torque, which is thrown to the front wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

That’s a heap of power for the front wheels to handle, though Hyundai’s wizardry with FWD systems means that the Sonata N Line doesn’t feel overwhelming while putting down the power, even while lacking the trick limited-slip differential of the i30 N.

The shifts are super fast thanks to the DCT unit, with the Sonata happy to change directions impressively fast for a sedan of its size.

As a result, the Sonata N-Line feels approachable for all levels of drivers, and is a barrel of fun when opening the throttle, though the ride quality does suffer on some of Australia’s rougher roads.

When you’re simply cruising around town, the Sonata feels far more refined, with the suspension system preferring relatively smooth surfaces and rewarding occupants with smooth ride quality that borders on the firm side, but remains accommodating.

The Sonata’s centre console is beefy, accommodating a pair of cup holders, a decent amount of storage at the base of the dash, large door bins on either side of the cabin and some more storage under the armrest.

Move to the rear of the cabin and things remain spacious, with the Sonata offering more than enough legroom for tall adults, though the panoramic sunroof has eaten up into the headroom potential.

The second row picks up ISOFIX anchors and top tether mounts, with the Sonata N Line’s boot measuring in at a healthy 510L, resulting in midsize SUV-rivalling space and practicality.

Is it Safe?

Hyundai is yet to get the Sonata N Line tested by ANCAP, but offers a comprehensive range of active safety equipment as standard to help sweeten the deal for Australian buyers.
