Land Rover is an automotive company that specialises in SUVs and 4WDs founded back in 1948 that became famous for its tough off-roaders thanks to a simple body-on-frame design that was used up until 2017.

Land Rover is actually part of the wider Jaguar-Land Rover Group, otherwise known as JLR, that is owned by Indian company Tata Motors after a 2008 deal, and was previously owned by BMW and Ford.

In modern times, Tata has turned Land Rover into a massively popular brand and pop culture icon thanks to its Evoque and Range Rover vehicles that receive sleek stylish, clever technology and incredibly spacious, feature-packed interior designs that have proved a hit with premium SUV buyers.

Land Rover FAQs

It stands to reason that the most reliable year of Land Rover vehicles are the current generations, for example, 2018-2022, because they benefit from the latest research and development techniques, as well as the latest manufacturing techniques.

Having said that, modern technology does not guarantee reliability; in some cases it’s quite the opposite- and even its latest-generation vehicles that contain complicated electronic systems may be prone to issues.

Consumer reports indicate that some of the most reliable year Land Rovers are the 2014 Range Rover SVR, 1989 Land Rover 90, 1983 Land Rover 110, 2011 Range Rover Evoque, with fans pointing out that 1994, 2003 and 2012 were particularly strong years.

In Australia, it can indeed be an expensive process to diagnose and fix mechanical and electrical issues for a Land Rover vehicle.

More common parts and simple fixes can be obtained at a reasonable price, however, more complicated repairs requiring specialised OEM parts can be costly to repair. The cost of labour at one of Land Rover’s dealerships can also be a common cause of expensive fixes, which is something to keep in mind before the warranty runs out.

In spite of its Indian ownership, the majority of Land Rover’s lineup, including the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque and the Land Rover Discovery Sport are produced in England.

Land Rover also has production lines in India, Slovakia, Brazil and China that produce the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Defender and the Discovery for certain markets.

The main difference between Land Rover & Range Rover is that the former is the official name of the brand/company, while the Range Rover name refers to individual vehicles within the Land Rover line-up.

Range Rover vehicles are typically the flagship vehicle, while the Land Rover-branded Discovery sit at the base of Land Rover’s lineup as an entry-point of a range that features cars like the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport as the flagships.

There have been a number of consumer reports of common problems with the Land Rover Discovery, otherwise known as the ‘Disco’. The most common issues include leaking head gaskets that can cause a loss of compression, overheating issues caused by radiator problems, oil leaks, problems with the air springs, fuel hose issues and a number of electrical problems involving the ignition, window regulators and cruise control systems.

While it’s impossible to say definitively which is the single-best off-road manufacturer, automotive experts are widely in agreement that Land Rover is indeed amongst the top performers when it comes to off-road driving.

While their modern creations have gained a heap of weight from their luxurious features, they remain impressive when pushed off-road and very much uphold Land Rover’s reputation as one of the best off-road brands.
