Vehicle overview

The Mazda CX-5 has long been one of the most popular midsize SUVs sold here in Australia, and there’s no shortage of reasons why.

From the outset, it’s hard to deny it’s one of the best-looking packages in the midsize SUV space, with its sleek lines and sporty profile assuring buyers it’s not a boring family mover.

Step inside the cabin and you’ll find Mazda is still atop the pile when it comes to visually appealing interior designs that look and feel great, while still offering a host of practical touches to keep families happy.

On the road, the CX-5 is an impressive vehicle, offering comfortable and super user-friendly drive around town while still being able to tackle corners with an impressive amount of sportiness, as we’ve come to expect from Mazda.

Bundle that with Mazda’s generous approach to features in the base model, topped by some seriously luxurious siblings higher up the range and you’ve got yourself one of the most impressive midsize SUVs on sale in Australia.

Mazda CX-5 FAQs

The CX-5 should be considered a good buy for anyone in the market for a stylish, practical and surprisingly engaging medium SUV package that ticks both sensible and sporty boxes for buyers. The CX-5 holds its own in the midsize SUV segment when it comes to practicality, while offering an edge when it comes to on-road handling thanks to Mazda’s suspension hardware and sharp steering.

The second-generation (KF) Mazda CX-5 measures 4,550mm long, 1,840mm wide and has a wheelbase spanning 2,700mm, making it slightly shorter than the RAV4 which measures in at 4,600mm long, 1,855mm wide though the CX-5 actually has a 10mm longer wheelbase which spans 2,690mm in the case of the RAV4.

Mazda has a number of large production lines around the globe that manufacture the CX-5 for certain markets. These are located in Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Vietnam and Russia. Australian-delivered CX-5 examples are primarily built at one of Mazda’s largst production lines located in Hiroshima, Japan.

The ‘CX’ in the Mazda CX-5’s name is an abbreviated form of ‘Crossover’ referring to its SUV body shape and construction. While some SUVs feature a body-on-frame design, the CX-5 receives a unibody platform that offers superior weight benefits that lend to excellent handling characteristics on the road. This is reflected in the CX-5’s name, which the company uses for all of its SUV versions, including the CX-3, CX-30, CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90.

Currently, the cheapest version of the CX-5 is the entry-level G20 Maxx variant, sitting at the base of the range with a price tag of $36,740. This is likely to change when the third, ‘KI’ generation CX-5 range touches down in Australia in the second half of 2026.

Mazda has a whole has a very solid reputation when it comes to vehicle reliability, and this extends to the CX-5. While there have been some mechanical issues, specifically related to Mazda’s turbo-diesel engine lineup, the company has since moved away from that particular engine and the CX-5 remains a reasonably safe bet when it comes to long term reliability, so long as you maintain the vehicle on time and according to Mazda’s logbook.

Only older versions of the Mazda CX-5 can be started via the key fob, with the company transporting its remote start functions in its more modern vehicles to the MyMazda application and connected services suite.

While impossible to say definitively, the life expectancy of a Mazda CX-5 may stretch out from 10 to 20 years, if not more, so long as you keep the vehicle serviced on time and tick to Mazda’s recommended replacement parts outlined in the logbooks. With the right mechanical care, you can expect to see the odometer clock up half a million kilometres.
