image for Review - 2020 Mazda CX-9 Mazda’s flagship large SUV has always been a fan favourite due to its beautiful looks, driving dynamics, convenience and practicality. It’s just gotten better with Mazda’s feature packed update to the whole CX-9 range.

The winning formula design

The interior and exterior of the CX-9 feels modern, well thought out and stylish. The quality of the materials chosen across all variants is apparent, all aesthetically pleasing and very nice to touch.  The seats feel supportive and it comes with plenty of adjustments to suit to different preferences, perfect for drivers of all shapes and sizes.  The three zone climate control with dedicated air vents in all three rows is also a nice touch for added comfort.

The CX-9 is a true 7-seater with an abundant amount of space inside, including a proper third row complete with cup holders. With the third row in use, the boot size is still very descent, providing more cargo room than some of its major competitors.

Safety is top of mind

The new Mazda CX-9 comes packed with loads of standard safety features. These include head-up display, rear view camera with sensors, blind spot monitoring, driver attention alert, forward obstruction warning, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist system, rear cross traffic alert, smart brake support, smart city brake support and traffic sign recognition all to help you avoid accidents. Premium variants include a 360 degree-view camera just to add extra protection and convenience.

Once you take the time to get to know the MZD Connect system, you realise what a great safety tool it is. It’s easy to use, clear and intuitive, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. The system can be controlled by touch screen or a very simple and smart swivel. The interface also comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard on all model to enhance phone connectivity and usability.

Cruising down the road

The upgraded suspension and steering has been tweaked to feel sportier without sacrificing comfort. The car feels agile, stable, planted on corners. Road noise and vibration levels are kept to a minimum as well. Even the engine noise is refined and progressive, partly thanks to Mazda’s excellent noise and vibration suppression measures it engineers into its cars. Overall, the CX-9 offers class-rivalling driving dynamics that are well suited to Australian roads.

If you’re looking to buy a family SUV, you can’t go wrong with the CX-9. Offering a spacious interior, comfort, great driving dynamics, loads of safety tech and plenty of space. It ticks the boxes of what a large SUV should do.

  • One of the roomiest 7-seat crossovers on the market
  • Large boot space
  • Extensive safety tech
  • Very user friendly
  • 5-year warranty

  • Adaptive cruise control could do with further refinement
  • More gears could help with economy
  • 2000kg max towing capacity doesn’t compare well with some SUVs in this class
