How Fast is the Volkswagen Touareg R?

Sitting at the top of the Touareg range, the Touareg R looks set to be a remarkably fast SUV package considering its long footprint and hefty proportions thanks to an all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Underneath the bonnet of the Touareg R you’ll find a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 pushing out 250kW of power and 450Nm of torque, which is a decent amount of power on its own.

The 3.0-litre V6 is paired with an electric motor that kicks out an additional 100kW of power and 400Nm of torque, with combined outputs standing at a massive 340kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

Power is thrown to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

Volkswagen says the Touareg R can sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in just 5.1 seconds, making it a seriously fast large SUV, while braked towing figures remain at 3,500kg.

What Performance Touches Does the Volkswagen Touareg R Receive?

Aside from the potent plug-in hybrid V6 powertrain, the Touareg R is packaged with a number of sporty enhancements that make it a true range-topper.

At each wheel, you’ll find an upgraded set of R-performance brakes measuring a massive 19-inches at the front and 18-inches at the rear, clamped by upgraded brake calipers that receive a blue finish and an R logo.

There’s also an adaptive air suspension system that can be adjusted to soften up on a daily drive while becoming firm and more aggressive while you’re stretching its legs on the open road.

The Touareg R also picks up a black sports exhaust system that makes the 3.0-litre V6 sound more aggressive, and a series of black styling enhancements that make it by far the sportiest member of the Touareg lineup.

Is it Fuel Efficient?

Volkswagen’s new plug-in hybrid unit powering the Touareg R looks to be extremely fuel-efficient, so long as the battery is charged up, at least.

The company says that combined cycle fuel economy figures for the Touareg R stand at just 3.3L/100km, which is incredibly efficient for a vehicle of its size and power figures, though these figures will sky-rocket when the battery is depleted.

How Far Can the Volkswagen Touareg R Drive on Electric Power?

Volkswagen packages the Touareg R with a 14.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack that provides juice to the electric motor.

The battery offers up to 51km of all-electric driving based on WLTP combined cycle test figures.

Is it Practical and Spacious?

The Touareg range has always been impressive when put to the family test, and while it’s a performance-focused machine, the Touareg R looks to maintain this reputation with a large cabin perfect for Aussie families.

Up front the cabin is familiar to the rest of the Touareg range, though upgraded with a generous handful of premium, sporty and high-tech touches that make it look like a true flagship.

The chunky centre console separating the driver and front passenger features a storage tray hiding behind the gear lever, while there’s also a pair of cup holders, tonnes of storage inside the folding armrest and large bottle holders.

While it’s got more than enough space to be a seven-seater, Volkswagen has stuck with a more relaxed five-seat arrangement which means there is acres of space in the second row.

Adults won’t have a problem stretching out and getting comfortable, while there’s more than enough headroom for taller passengers, making for a great place for kids to sit.

The second row also features a clever sliding and reclining design, while dedicated climate control inputs, USB ports and large bottle holders make it a premium, family-friendly affair in the rear.

The Touareg’s second row also picks up a pair of ISOFIX anchors, a trio of top tether mounts and more than enough cabin width to accommodate three baby seats in the rear.

Finally, the Volkswagen Touareg’s boot measures in at a very healthy 610L which is more than enough for a full-sized school run or holiday road trip, making it a super spacious, family-friendly SUV package overall.

Is it Safe?

The Volkswagen Touareg R is yet to receive an official ANCAP safety rating, though the wider Touareg range scored a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating a few years ago.

In those tests, the Touareg R scored:

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 89%

  • Child Occupant Protection: 88%

  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 72%

  • Safety Assist: 78%

While Volkswagen is yet to confirm the final safety equipment list for the Touareg R, we do know that it will come packaged with forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign detection and both front and rear cross-traffic alerts.

Our Verdict: Is the Volkswagen Touareg R Worth it?

If you’re in the market for a large, practical and super premium SUV that has no problem leaving sports cars in its wake at a set of lights… the Touareg R might be the perfect package for you.

The adoption of a new plug-in hybrid engine not only gives instant torque from the electric motor, it helps massively increase the Touareg’s fuel efficiency which means its performance won’t immediately burn a hole in your pocket.

All up, we’re excited to get behind the wheel of the Touareg R and as a complete package, it looks to be one of the most attractive large, fast and premium SUVs hitting the market in 2024.
