Vehicle overview

The Triton is a super versatile ute for working Aussies and adventurous family buyers. It’s become one of the most popular utes thanks to its tough build, impressive off-road abilities and its particularly attractive value proposition.

Thanks to a major overhaul, the Triton is even more accomplished on the worksite, conquering off-road trails and even more well-behaved as a daily driver around town.

Within the range, there are family-friendly Dual-Cab ute body shapes, as well as a Club Cab that offers even more space in the tray, with both 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains on offer for Aussies looking to hit the dirt with confidence.

The update has also seen the Triton’s braked towing capacities increase to 3500kg, pulling it in line with its rivals, while Mitsubishi’s outstanding ten-year warranty program helps to give buyers long-standing peace of mind.

On the road, the Triton is user-friendly and easy for new drivers to build confidence, while its rugged nature and tough build quality means it’s a versatile ute that isn’t afraid to get its toes dirty.

Mitsubishi Triton FAQs

For a vehicle of its size, power and towing capabilities, the Mitsubishi Triton is impressively fuel efficient. In Triton 4x2 variants, which power only the rear wheels, combined fuel economy figures stand at between 7.4 - 7.6L per 100km. Stepping up to the 4x4 range means you’ll consume a claimed 7.5 - 7.7L per 100km, depending on the variant, making the Triton one of the most fuel-efficient utes in the segment.

The most affordable Triton variant in the range is the GLX 4x2 single cab chassis with a manual transmission, which is priced at $34,490, making it one of the most affordable utes in its class. The cheapest double cab version of the Triton, the GLX Dual Cab automatic is priced at $43,840 while the most affordable Club Cab, the GLX+ 4x4 is priced at $47,240.

While Mitsubishi has production lines scattered across the globe, the company’s manufacturing hub for Australian-bound Triton vehicles is located in Thailand. More specifically, Tritons sold here in Australia are built at Mitsubishi’s Laem Chabang factory just south of Bangkok.

The Mitsubishi Triton has rightfully earned itself a solid reputation when it comes to reliability, even in the harsh conditions of Australia. While no vehicle, including the Triton, is immune from mechanical issues, so long as you keep the Triton serviced according to manufacturers' recommended intervals, you can expect a relatively trouble-free ownership experience, particularly with Mitsubishi’s capped-price servicing program that stretches out to ten years, if you keep it serviced within the network.

The sixth-generation ‘LC’ Triton range features a timing chain, rather than a belt, for the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel powertrain. This is a good thing when it comes to reliability and longevity, due to the fact that timing chains typically have a longer lifespan than belts. Owners can expect to the Triton’s timing chain to last anywhere between 120,000 - 240,000 without needing to be replaced, though it’s entirely possible that the chain will last the lifespan of the engine.

The Mitsubishi is a rock-solid option for buyers looking for a tough and capable ute for work and family duties alike. The Triton platform has proven itself as a strong option when it comes to cargo carrying and towing, while higher-ranking members of the range pick up some added off-road gear that make it a very confident all-terrain package. Inside, the Triton comes with a tidy, almost SUV-like cabin with a solid technology offering that makes it feel nice and refined for a workhorse.

It’s impossible to say exactly how long a Triton can last, though it stands to reason that owners willing to stick to Mitsubishi’s logbook requirements and intervals may well see the odometer surpass 500,000 kilometres or more.

All variants and body shapes of the sixth-generation, 'LC' Mitsubishi Triton range have braked towing capacities totaling 3,500kg. Some variants within the Triton range, however, are more suited to towing heavy loads if you intend to max out its 3.5 tonne capacity, due to their added gross combination mass (GCM) figures. The entry-level Trito Single Cab range has a GCM figure of 6,210kg, increasing to 6250kg in the Triton Club & Double Cab range, making the latter options the best suited versions of the Triton for towing.
