What Engine Powers the Peugeot 408?

Peugeot’s 408 Fastback comes powered by a clever plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery pack, an identical setup to that powering the existing 308 GT Sport PHEV.

Under the bonnet, the 408 receives a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pushes out 132kW of power and 250Nm of torque.

The petrol unit works alongside an electric motor mounted at the front axle that produces 81kW of power and 320Nm of torque.

Combined power and torque outputs for the Peugeot 408 stand at 165kW and 360Nm, respectively, with electricity provided to the e-motor via a 12.4kWh battery pack.

Power is thrown to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission in a configuration identical to the current 308 GT Sport PHEV hatchback, with a 0-100km/h time standing at 7.8 seconds.

How Far Can the Peugeot 408 PHEV Drive on Electric Power Alone?

The 12.4kWh battery pack powering the Peugeot 408 GT Fastback PHEV offers all-electric driving figures up to 60km on the WLTP test cycle.

Is it Fuel Efficient?

Peugeot’s plug-in hybrid tech makes for a super fuel-efficient Fastback offering, so long as the battery is charged.

Officially, Peugeot says the 408 GT Fastback PHEV is rated at 1.5L/100km.

As per usual with plug-in hybrid vehicles, the figures listed above require a charged battery pack, allowing the electric motor to provide as much assistance to the petrol unit as possible.

Is it Practical and Spacious?

Peugeot has opted for a near identical front cabin to that of the 308 hatchback, which is quite a good thing.

The cockpit features a low-slung seating position that gives the driver and front passenger a decent amount of headroom, even for taller drivers.

In terms of storage, the 408 offers a chunky centre console with a split-fold armrest, a retractable tray hiding cup holders, a wireless charging pad, a glovebox and a pair of sizable bottle holders on either side of the cabin.

To get an idea of its size, the Peugeot 408 measures 4685mm long, 1869mm wide, 1485mm tall and has a wheelbase spanning 2790mm, which gives it a longer wheelbase than a number of midsize SUVs.

This will likely translate to a generous amount of legroom for those seated in the rear of the cabin, as well as ISOFIX anchors and top tether mounts for child seats that make it an option for growing families.

How big is the Peugeot 408 GT PHEV’s Boot?

The Peugeot 408 GT PHEV has a boot measuring 471L, putting it within striking distance of many popular midsize SUVs.

Fold down the rear seats and the 408 can swallow up to 1545L of bulky cargo and sports equipment.

Is it Safe?

As a single, highly-specified variant, the Peugeot 408 GT PHEV picks up a long list of active safety gear.

The list includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keep assist with lane-departure alerts, driver attention alerts and a rear-view camera with front & rear parking sensors.

Does the Peugeot 408 GT PHEV Have an ANCAP Safety Rating?

The Peugeot 408 GT PHEV is yet to be officially tested by ANCAP.

Testing by the European-equivalent Euro NCAP awarded the Peugeot 408 range with a four-star safety rating after scoring the following marks.

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 76%

  • Child Occupant Protection: 84%

  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 78%

  • Safety Assist: 65%

What Warranty Does the Peugeot 408 GT PHEV Come With?

The Peugeot 408 GT plug-in hybrid range is offered with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre factory warranty.

The 408’s battery is also backed by an eight-year/160,000km warranty that ensures its capacity will remain above 70 per cent.
