In a world overflowing with family-friendly SUVs, the Mazda 6 has stuck to its guns with a choice of sleek, sedan and wagon variants.

Since its introduction, the Mazda 6’s practical yet stylish design has made it a favourite for many family buyers, providing them with on-road dynamics that are hard to match with its taller, bulkier SUV rivals.

Sadly, though, Mazda has confirmed that the Mazda 6 sedan and wagon will be exiting the Australian market this year, though says a “healthy supply” will remain on dealer floors throughout 2025.

Should you get your hands on the outgoing Mazda 6 range before it’s too late? Let’s take a closer look to find out.

What Features & Specs Does the Mazda 6 Have?

The entry-level Mazda 6 Sport range comes riding on 17-inch alloys and picks up LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, cloth upholstery with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, keyless push-button start, a rear-view camera with rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a head-up display and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The Mazda 6 Touring range picks up LED daytime running lamps, keyless entry, leather upholstery with power-adjustable front seats and a pair of auto-folding mirrors, while the Mazda 6 GT SP range receives black 19-inch alloys, heated front & rear seats, adaptive LED headlights, Mazda’s Cruising and Traffic support system and Burgundy leather upholstery.

The range-topping Mazda 6 Atenza receives bespoke 19-inch alloys, a heated steering wheel, 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a surround-view monitor, black Nappa leather upholstery with ventilated front seats, a sunroof and adaptive LED headlights.

Mazda 6 Connectivity & Infotainment Features

One area the Mazda 6 range can’t hide its ageing platform is the infotainment tech on offer.

Packing an 8.0-inch infotainment system across the range, the Mazda 6 isn’t the last word in car tech, though it covers all the important basics with satellite navigation, AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio and a six-speaker sound system packaged as standard.

Upgrading to the Mazda 6 Touring range also adds a more powerful 11-speaker sound system.

Does the Mazda 6 Have Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto?

One of the key signs giving away the Mazda 6’s age is the absence of wireless smartphone mirroring.

Instead, buyers will need to bring their own USB cable in order to connect their Android or iOS device to the Mazda 6’s infotainment system, with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remaining your only options.

Is the Mazda 6 Comfortable to Drive?

On the road, the Mazda 6 confidently holds its own in the face of its more contemporary rivals.

It’s a well-mannered package while driving around town, surprisingly sporty in the corners and a confident long-distance touring option that takes the cake over its higher-riding, bulkier SUV competitors.

Under the bonnet, the Mazda 6 range is offered with two engines.

Entry-level Mazda 6 G25 versions come powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol that produces 140kW of power and 252Nm of torque, which is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Buyers looking for a little extra power have the option of the G35 engine in more premium trim levels, which adds a turbocharger into the mix and increases power to 173kW while peak torque figures stand at a much healthier 420Nm.

The base engine is decent, albeit a little uninspiring if the Mazda 6 is fully loaded, while the option of a turbocharged engine gives family buyers looking for a spirited family car some serious food for thought.

On a jaunt around town, the Mazda 6 is fabulous.

Shifts are smooth thanks to the six-speed automatic while the lightweight steering rack makes it easy to navigate tight turns, though you will need to keep an eye on its proportions while parking.

Pick up the pace and the Mazda 6 remains refined inside thanks to its quiet cabin and while the suspension is firmer than you might expect, the trade-off is that it offers dynamic handling that culminate in a very fun weekend drive.

With sharp steering that offers more feedback as you pick up speed, an agile front axle and wheel-mounted paddles, the Mazda 6 is engaging when pushed and proves family vehicles don’t have to be boring.

On a long trip up the highway, the Mazda 6 proves itself a lovely long-distance tourer and a super capable all-rounder for families that is user-friendly around town and confident on a mix of Aussie roads.

Is the Mazda 6 Fuel Efficient?

All things considered, the Mazda 6 range is reasonably fuel-efficient when you consider its size, weight and family-friendly nature.

On a combined cycle, the Mazda 6 with the lesser-powered G25 engine is rated at 7.0L/100km which increases to 7.6L per 100km in the case of the turbocharged G35 engine.

While they’re not ground-breaking figures for the market, considering its age and the fact there’s no hybrid assistance on offer, the Mazda 6 isn’t a problem drinker whatsoever.

Better yet, both engines, including the turbocharged G35 unit can drink RON 91 fuel.

  • Mazda 6 G25 City Fuel Economy: 8.9L per 100km

  • Mazda 6 G25 Highway Fuel Economy: 5.9L per 100km

  • Mazda 6 G25 Combined Cycle Fuel Economy: 7.0L per 100km

  • Mazda 6 G35 City Fuel Economy: 10.1L per 100km

  • Mazda 6 G35 Highway Fuel Economy: 6.2L per 100km

  • Mazda 6 G35 Combined Cycle Fuel Economy: 7.6L per 100km

Is the Mazda 6 Practical and Spacious?

The Mazda 6 can be yours in both a sedan and a wagon layout, giving buyers the best of both worlds for their SUV alternative family chariot.

Step inside and you’ll see that, in spite of its age, the Mazda 6’s interior layout still looks pretty on point, though the smallish infotainment system does give away some signs.

In terms of the fundamentals, the Mazda 6 has you covered.

There are no headroom issues, even for tall drivers, while the base models with cloth upholstery still pick up a leather-wrapped steering wheel to keep things feeling premium up front.

The Mazda 6’s layout is clean and simple in its execution, which helps to disguise its aging skeleton underneath.

With dials for the climate control settings flanked by some physical buttons, it’s easy to make quick changes on the fly and change the infotainment settings via Mazda’s rotary dial on the centre console.

Notably, all of the important touch points receive a nice, soft finish to keep things comfortable on a long drive, while no shortage of practical touches will keep family buyers happy.

The Mazda 6’s cabin offers a sizable storage area hiding behind the gear lever as well as a pair of cupholders and added storage inside the folding armrest, beside the steering wheel and inside the large bottle holders inside the doors… and a glovebox.

Move to the second row and the Mazda 6 performs well on the practicality front, offering decent legroom for adults, though tall rear passengers might struggle behind a tall driver.

That said, there’s more than enough space for growing kids in the back of the Mazda 6 and a healthy amount of headroom, too.

For parents, the Mazda 6 receives a pair of ISOFIX anchors and three top tether mounts hiding on the seatbacks, proving itself a worthy alternative to your typical midsize SUV package for sedan and wagon enthusiasts.

How Big is the Mazda 6’s Boot?

The Mazda 6 range is offered in both sedan and wagon variants, the latter of which offers the largest amount of space in the boot.

The Mazda 6 sedan’s boot measures 474L, expanding to a maximum of 1,648 when you fold the 60:40 split rear seats down.

For those looking for the biggest boot possible, the Mazda 6 wagon’s boot measures 506L with the rear seats standing, expanding to 1,648L with the rear seats folded.

  • Mazda 6 Sedan Boot Space: 474L

  • Mazda 6 Wagon Boot Space: 506L

Is it Safe?

While it’s far from the most modern vehicle on the road today, the Mazda 6 ticks a number of important boxes when it comes to safety tech.

2025 mazda 6 off-road

As standard, the Mazda 6 range picks up both forward and reverse autonomous emergency braking, as well as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

Buyers also pick up a rear-view camera with rear parking sensors, driver attention alerts, tyre pressure monitoring, traffic sign detection and an intelligent speed assist system.

Upgrading to the Mazda 6 Touring range adds a set of front-mounted parking sensors while the GT SP picks up Mazda’s cruising and traffic support system and the range-topping Mazda 6 Atenza receives a surround-view monitor.

Does the Mazda 6 Have an ANCAP Safety Rating?

The Mazda 6’s five-star ANCAP safety rating expired in the latter stages of 2024.

2025 mazda 6 ancap

For reference, the Mazda 6 secured a five-star ANCAP safety rating after scoring the following marks in its 2018 testing.

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 95%

  • Child Occupant Protection: 91%

  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 66%

  • Safety Assist: 73%

What Warranty Does the Mazda 6 Come With?

Mazda offers the Mazda 6 range with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty.

The company also caps prices for servicing the Mazda 6 for five years.

2025 mazda 6 rear

Total servicing costs for the Mazda 6 with the G25 engine stand at $2,114, while servicing the turbocharged G35 engine costs $2,505 over the course of five visits to the service floor.

Service intervals for the Mazda 6 range have, thankfully, increased up to 12 months or 15,000-kilometres, whichever elapses first.

Our Verdict: Is the Mazda 6 Worth it?

One of the Mazda 6’s biggest appeals is the very appealing alternative it gives to potential SUV buyers.

2025 mazda 6 headlights

Considering that SUVs outnumber sedans and wagons to a serious degree, this may be the determining factor for some enthusiasts of the segment to take the Mazda 6 for a test drive.

With its practical sedan and wagon layouts, buyers can soak up the benefits of the Mazda 6’s refined yet sporty nature on the road without a heap of compromise to its family-friendly appeal inside the cabin.

It’s a shame that Mazda is removing the Mazda 6 from the Australian market, though hopefully, it will make its return Down Under with a striking new look, revamped engine tech and a much-needed technology update in the not-too-distant future.

If you’re sitting on the fence, go out and test drive the Mazda 6 before it’s too late.
