Peugeot has given its iconic little 308 hatchback a fully electric overhaul, with the E-308 hitting our shores in very limited numbers.

Rather than a conventional launch, the company has launched a small batch of E-308 units to a select few customers, with Peugeot using their first-hand experience to gain insights as part of a somewhat unusual evaluation program.

The E-308 has some seriously tough competition in the electric hatchback segment, though, so let’s break down the pricing and specifications to see if it's worth a closer inspection.

Keep in mind that this price includes on-road costs, though allocations have been extremely limited here in Australia.

Connectivity & Infotainment Features

The Peugeot E-308 picks up the same infotainment system you'll find in the regular 308 hatchback.

This means there's a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display packaged neatly inside the unique, angular dashboard arrangement.

Peugeot's 10.0-inch display is responsive to touch inputs and offers high brightness levels, while a series of configurable, touch-sensitive shortcuts can be found below the display.

Buyers pick up AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio as well as satellite navigation and a six-speaker sound system.

The E-308's infotainment system supports both wired and wireless smartphone connections, allowing you to pair your phone without a USB cable in order to access both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

What Powers the Peugeot E-308?

The Peugeot E-308 comes powered by a single electric motor that powers the front wheels, giving it the same FWD layout as the regular 308 hatch.

That electric motor pushes out 115kW of power and 270Nm of torque, giving the E-308 a 0-100km/h sprint time of 9.8 seconds.

  • Power: 115kW

  • Torque: 270Nm

  • 0-100km/h: 9.8 seconds

Peugeot has installed a 50kWh lithium-ion battery pack underneath the E-308's floor.

The company says its electric motor consumes juice at a rate of 16.9kWh per 100km, giving it a claimed range of 400km, according to testing on the WLTP test cycle.

  • Battery Size: 50kWh

  • Battery Chemistry: NMC

  • Energy Efficiency: 16.9kWh per 100km

  • Range: 400km (WLTP test cycle)

How Fast Can you charge the Peugeot E-308?

Underneath, the E-308 picks up 400-volt architecture, which means you can charge it with the help of a DC fast-charger at speeds up to 100kW.

This makes it slightly slower to charge than the majority of its rivals, which can hit speeds up to around the 150kW mark.

With a 100kW DC fast charger, Peugeot says you can charge the 50kWh NMC battery back from 0 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes, with rises to the five-hour mark with a three-phase charger.

  • Length: 4,365mm

  • Wheelbase: 2,675mm

  • Width: 1,859mm (mirrors folded)

Is it Practical and Spacious?

The Peugeot 308 platform greets buyers with one of the most unique and charismatic cabins anywhere on the market.

In typical Peugeot fashion, the company has opted for a very distinctive design that features sharp angles, premium materials and a characteristically small steering wheel in front of the driver.

Peugeot positions the driver and front passenger in a pair of low-slung seats that make the driving position feel both sporty and more accommodating to taller drivers, which is a nice touch.

The cabin is particularly high-tech, with a three-dimensional digital instrument cluster positioned in front of the driver and a 10-inch infotainment system smack bang on the dash with some touchscreen shortcuts sitting beneath.

There's a decent range of storage options in the front of the cabin, with a pair of cupholders, a smartphone tray beside a retractable storage area, a glovebox, large bottle holders and added storage inside the split-fold armrest.

Move to the second row of the 308's cabin, and things get a bit more cramped.

Adults can expect to have their knees up against the seatback behind a tall driver, while headroom isn’t the best in the segment, either, though there's more than enough space for kids to get comfortable back here.

The Peugeot 308 second row picks up a pair of ISOFIX anchors and top tether mounts for a variety of child seats, as well as air vents, USB chargers, map pockets and bottle holders.

How Big is the Peugeot E-308's Boot?

For a reasonably pint-sized hatchback, the E-308 presents buyers with a healthy amount of boot space.

With the rear seats standing, there's 434L worth of real estate in the boot.

Fold down the 60/40 split rear seats and there's a very decent 1,467L of cargo sapce for bigger suitcases, sports equipment and any bulky cargo that needs to be lugged around.

  • Boot Space Minimum: 434L

  • Boot Space Maximum: 1,467L

Is it Safe?

Peugeot has bundled in all the active safety tech you could hope for in the E-308.

There's autonomous emergency braking with multi-collision braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign detection, active lane-keep assist with lane departure alerts, a surround-view monitor with front and rear parking sensors and curtain airbags inside the cabin.

The E-308 is yet to receive a specific ANCAP safety rating, though the 308 platform in both petrol and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) variants has picked up a four-star safety rating from testing in 2022, where it scored the following marks.

  • Adult Occupant Protection: 79%

  • Child Occupant Protection: 86%

  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: 68%

  • Safety Assist: 82%

Again, the aforementioned ANCAP safety results do not apply to the E-308, which remains unrated; they are just a reference point for the wider 308 platform

What Warranty Does the Peugeot E-308 Come With?

The Peugeot E-308 comes backed by a five-year/unlimited kilometre while the battery and high voltage components are backed by a separate eight-year/160,000 kilometre warranty program.

Buyers also pick up a capped price servicing plan that stretches out to five years.

Servicing totals for the E-308 stand at $1,867 for five visits to the service centre, with intervals sitting at 12 months or 25,000 kilometres, whichever elapses first.
