Light commercial vehicles, or LCVs for short, provide the perfect avenue for buyers that are getting their hands dirty on the worksite during the week, but still need to be practical enough for a family or adventurous enough to get out and about on the weekend - which is why they continue to top sales charts.

Let’s take a look at seven of the best light commercial vehicles currently on sale in Australia to see which is worth a spot on your shortlist.

7 Best Light Commercial Vehicles in Australia

1. Toyota HiLux

The Toyota HiLux has one of the most accomplished resumes in our list of Australia’s best light commercial vehicles, and remains one of the best-selling, even after five decades.

It’s not hard to see why Australians continue to gravitate toward the HiLux range, which has dozens of different variants from work-focused single cab utes to more family-friendly dual cab workhorses that give buyers a heap of versatility.

In its latest form, the HiLux range features a choice of two turbo-diesel powertrains and a petrol engine, with both manual and automatic transmissions available across 4x2 and 4x4 variants- the latter of which are incredible performers when pushed off-road or towing heavy objects.

2. Ford Ranger

Going head-to-head with the Toyota HiLux is no easy feat, but Ford has proved that it is very much up for the challenge with its Ranger lineup that is a fabulous light commercial vehicle for Australian buyers.

The Ranger has just been given a major overhaul for the latest model year, with a styling refresh, upgraded hardware, and a new lineup of engines available for buyers.

Like the HiLux, the Ford Ranger comes available in a very versatile lineup, with 4x2 single cab chassis variants kicking off the range, stretching out to 4x4 dual cab chassis and pickup variants that introduces buyers to a Ranger suited to their specific needs.

The lineup comes powered by a choice of four engines, including three turbo-diesel units and a fiery twin-turbo V6 petrol in the flagship Raptor that proves a heap of fun on the road.

3. Peugeot Expert

Peugeot has proved a strong performer within the light commercial vehicle segment for decades now thanks to its lineup of cargo-focussed vans, the latest of which, the Expert is a great addition to any workforce.

The Expert range features a choice of short and long-wheelbase variants fitted with both manual and automatic transmissions, with power supplied by one of two turbo-diesel engines that range from 110kW/370Nm in the cheapest model, up to 130kW/400Nm in the Expert Sport.

Inside, the Expert’s cabin is relatively modern for a commercial van, while the acres of space in the rear cargo tray make it a workhorse thanks to its 5.3m3 of storage in the smallest variant, which expands up to 6.1m3 in long-wheelbase variants.

4. Volkswagen Transporter

Volkswagen’s extremely versatile Transporter lineup offers the work-ready nature of a light commercial vehicle with some practical touches that make for a great all-rounder for work and family duties.

The Transporter lineup is available in a mix of short and long-wheelbase variants that feature everything from a four-door crew van, a single cab tray, and a dual cab tray model that offers up endless possibilities for work, tailored to your needs.

Inside, the Transporter’s cabin is one of the more sophisticated members of the segment and feels as though you’re piloting one of its road cars, rather than a work-focussed van.

5. Mitsubishi Triton

Not only does the Triton confidently tick the boxes that both commercial and family buyers are looking for- it ticks them with one of the most affordable price lists on the market.

The Triton range features the same mix of single and double-cab chassis variants for commercial buyers alongside a range of single and dual-cab options for families, alongside 4x2 and 4x4 variants for buyers looking to push it to the limit.

Better still, the Triton takes the cake for the best ownership program currently available in Australia thanks to its ten-year warranty coverage with capped-price servicing.

6. Nissan Navara

While the Nissan Navara might be overshadowed in terms of sales by its rivals, it remains a heavyweight within the light commercial vehicle segment, with a variant for pretty much every need and task.

The Navara range features a choice of single and king cab variants, as well as a long list of dual-cab models that stretch out to the range-topping Navara Pro-4X Warrior, which is an absolute beast when pushed off-road.

Power comes supplied by a 2.3-litre turbo-diesel producing 120kW of power and 403Nm of torque in the base model, while the rest of the range picks up a beefier turbo-diesel producing 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

7. Renault Kangoo

For those in the market for an all-electric light commercial vehicle, Renault’s Kangoo E-TECH is designed as a battery-electric work partner, with a WLTP-rated range of more than 300km from its 45kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

Inside, the short-wheelbase L1 variant can accommodate up to 3.9m3 of cargo, with the long-wheelbase able to swallow up 4.9m3 worth of gear.

If you’re not interested in waiting, the standard Kangoo is available now, sharing the same practical underpinnings that make for a great work companion.
