How are New Car Sales Tracking in 2025?
With the help of the latest May edition of VFacts, published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, we can see that new car sales have dropped by 5 per cent, over the same period in 2024.
A total of 105,285 new cars were sold here in Australia in May, 2025 which, combined with data from the Electric Vehicle Council, amounts to a total of 109,425 vehicles delivered for the month.
Year-to-date sales for new vehicles have dropped 3.2 per cent overall over the same point in 2024, with electric vehicle sales growing to a 9.2 per cent share of the overall market after posting more than 10,000 vehicles delivered in May, 2025.
Sales of hybrid vehicles also moved North in May, with 17,089 hybrid vehicles delivered, representing a 5.5 per cent increase, while plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales continued to skyrocket, jumping 117.6 per cent over the same point in 2024, with a total of 3,081 sold.

According to the latest VFacts report, SUVs are by far the most popular type of vehicle sold in Australia, representing a massive 61.6 per cent share of the market; this includes small, medium and large SUVs.
Within that wider SUV category, medium SUVs are the most popular subcategory, followed by small SUVs and then large SUVs.
Light commercial vehicles come in second place, representing a 21.5 per cent share of the market, followed by passenger vehicles with a 13.3 per cent share and heavy commercial vehicles with a 3.6 share of the market in May, 2025.
