Volkswagen's ID.4 Pro range comes riding on a set of 19-inch black alloy wheels and picks up Matrix LED headlights, three-dimensional tail lights with dynamic indicators, adaptive suspension, a surround-view monitor with front & rear parking sensors, a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster, keyless entry & start, a panoramic sunroof, Art Velour upholstery with heated and massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging pad, three-zone climate control and adjustable ambient lighting.
Upgrading to the ID.4 GTX adds a set of 20-inch alloys, upgraded sports seats with red contrast stitching and a bespoke GTX styling package with interior enhancements.
Volkswagen ID.4 Connectivity & Infotainment Features
Both versions of the ID.4 range come fitted with a 12.9-inch infotainment system standing proudly atop the dashboard.
Volkswagen's display makes a nice first impression and certainly holds its own against the best in the electric SUV segment, offering crisp graphics and decent processing power.
The 12.9-inch display receives AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio and is paired with a seven-speaker sound system.
Buyers also pick up a five-year subscription to Volkswagen's ConnectGo suite of services, which offers remote vehicle tracking, vehicle and battery status updates.
Does the VW ID.4 Have Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto?
Early examples of the Volkswagen ID.4 range do not support wireless Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto connections, though the company is set to remedy this with any vehicles produced after July.
This means that you'll still want to pack your USB-C cable just to be safe.
Volkswagen says that a software update will be available for early build examples missing out on wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.
ID.4 examples built in the second half of 2025 are set to be packaged with both wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.
Is the Volkswagen ID.4 Comfortable to Drive?
While its competitors have enjoyed quite the head start, Volkswagen has done well to give the ID.4 a great set of road manners and particularly strong marks on the ride quality front.
Before we jump into the numbers, it's worth noting that the VW ID.4 is one of the only vehicles in its respective market segment - and price bracket - to receive a trick adaptive suspension system.
With the help of adaptive dampers, this gives the ID.4 a great balance on a mix of town and country driving, remaining sharp on its feet when tackling the urban jungle while softening up a bit on the rougher stuff.
This is a particularly noteworthy feature for Australian buyers living outside silky-smooth city streets.
The ID.4 Pro comes powered by a single electric motor that pushes out 210kW of power and 545Nm of torque to the rear wheels, giving it a brisk 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds.
Buyers looking for some more pace have the option of the ID.4 GTX, which picks up an additional electric motor over the front axle that produces 250kW of power and 679Nm of torque.
The ID.4 GTX is an all-wheel drive platform that hits 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds.
This means that the ID.4 isn't some boring, vanilla medium SUV package - even in base form, while the GTX version offers some serious acceleration of the line.
Both versions are remarkably easy to pilot around town thanks to their perky acceleration and lightweight, responsive handling, while the medium-sized SUV package remains easy to pilot through tight car parks.
How Far Can the VW ID.4 Drive on a Single Charge?
Both the ID.4 Pro and GTX come powered by the same 77kWh NMC lithium-ion battery pack, though efficiency figures vary between the single and dual-motor versions.
As you might imagine, the ID.4 Pro is the most efficient of the pair, consuming a claimed 16.7kWh per 100km which translates to a range figure of 544km on the WLTP test cycle.
-
ID.4 Pro Efficiency: 16.7kWh per 100km
-
ID.4 Pro Range: 544km
-
ID.4 GTX Range: 522km
How Fast Can you Charge the Volkswagen ID.4?
Volkswagen has given the ID.4 range decent fast-charging capabilities, though it's not the best in the segment when it comes to charging speeds.
The ID.4's 77kWh battery pack can be DC fast-charged at speeds up to 175kW, while peak AC charging speeds are capped at 11kWk.
The company says you can add up to 178 kilometres worth of range in just ten minutes, with access to the right DC fast charger.
-
DC Charging: 175kW
-
AC Charging: 11kW
How Big is the Volkswagen ID.4?
The ID.4 sits in the medium-sized SUV segment, making it large enough for family duties without being too big and cumbersome around town.
-
Length: 4,584mm
-
Wheelbase: 2,771mm
-
Width: 1,852mm
-
Height: 1,640mm
Is it Practical and Spacious?
The ID.4's cabin is a very neat and tidy affair.
Climb aboard and there's a familiar mix of Volkswagen touches blended with some new, more contemporary design elements that reflect the brand-new platform underneath.
Headroom for tall drivers and front passengers is plentiful, as is forward and side visibility thanks to the tall roofline and large windows that add some light inside the cabin.
There's a range of soft-touch materials used for the most important touchpoints, which makes things feel more comfortable and premium.
On the design front, the ID.4 picks up a sleek and minimalist dashboard and centre console that helps to keep things airy.
There's virtually nothing in the way of physical switchgear on the dash, with touch controls on hand for climate and media controls, as well as those polarising capacitive touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel.
Volkswagen has actually said that it's going to change the latter in the coming years, though for now at least, the ID.4 is stuck with them.
Storage options in the front of the cabin include a large split tray in the centre console that doubles as a pair of cupholders, with even more space inside the central retractable bin.
Move to the rear and the ID.4 treats those in the second row with a great deal of respect.
With the help of its bespoke battery-electric platform, the ID.4 offers great rear leg and headroom for adults.
Behind a tall driving position, adults won’t be pressed for space in the back of the ID.4, meaning you won't hear a peep from kids on a long trip, though they might not have a great view out the side windows, which rise quite prominently.
Thankfully, the panoramic sunroof helps to add some more light into the rear of the cabin.
Amenities in the second row come in the form of dedicated climate controls and air vents, USB charging ports, a folding armrest with built-in cupholders, door bins and a nifty little pocket on the seatback perfect for a smartphone.
For the parents, the ID.4 picks up a pair of ISOFIX anchors on each of the outboard seats as well as three top tether mounts on the seatbacks.
Installing a bulky child seat is reasonably simple thanks to wide aperture doors and a healthy gap between the first and second row seats.
How Big is the VW ID.4's Boot?
The Volkswagen ID.4 rounds out its family-friendly offering with a very handy amount of real estate in the boot.
With the second row standing, the ID.4's boot measures a respectable 543L.
Fold the second row seats forward and you’ll unlock 1,575L worth of cargo space when it's time to lug around some bulky items, sports gear or suitcases.
The ID.4's boot features a neat little gear tunnel between the 60/40 split rear seats, allowing you to slide some long, narrow items through while retaining a four-seat layout.
-
ID.4 Boot Space Minimum: 543L
-
ID.4 Boot Space Maximum: 1,575L
Is it Safe?
Volkswagen has bundled in a long list of active safety tech into the ID.4 range.
Perhaps more importantly, no important features are reserved for the ID.4 GTX.
As standard, the ID.4 boasts AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, emergency assist, lane-departure warnings with lane-keep assist, a surround-view monitor with front & rear parking sensors, Volkswagen's 'Travel Assist' system, proactive occupant protection and driver attention alerts.
Does the Volkswagen ID.4 Have an ANCAP Safety Rating?
The VW ID.4 has picked up a five-star ANCAP safety rating after testing in 2021 saw it score the following marks.
-
Adult Occupant Protection: 93%
-
Child Occupant Protection: 89%
-
Vulnerable Road User Protection: 76%
-
Safety Assist: 76%
What Warranty Does the Volkswagen ID.4 Come With?
VW offers the ID.4 range with a five-year/unlimited kilometre vehicle warranty.
Buyers also pick up a separate eight-year/160,000-kilometre warranty for the battery pack and high-voltage components.
There’s also 24 months' worth of roadside assistance bundled in, which stretches out another year each time you keep the ID.4 serviced within the VW network.
Prices for the ID.4's capped-price servicing packages can be found below, with service intervals standing at 24 months or 30,000 kilometres, whichever elapses first.
-
Six-Year Servicing Costs: $1,785
-
Eight-Year Servicing Costs: $2,350
-
Ten-Year Servicing Costs: $2,890
Our Verdict: Is the Volkswagen ID.4 Worth it?
While it took VW some time to get the ID.4 on Australian shores, it sits as a particularly strong option if you're in the market for a battery-electric midsize SUV package.
There's stacks of equipment in the base model, solid efficiency figures and the very welcome addition of adaptive suspension, which actually gives the ID.4 a bit of an edge over the competition when it comes to driving refinement and versatility.
We also appreciate the fact that Volkswagen has offered a more powerful, dual-motor version with an AWD system to keep more adventurous buyers happy.
As a result, we’d encourage you to add the ID.4 to your shortlist if you're tossing up your best battery-electric options in the medium SUV space.
